Destination: Known!

It used to be an annual ritual that we post one of your humble narrator’s favorite videos—OF ALL TIME.  We would do it every year but I think we skipped a year, last year.  When I say ‘we’, I mean ‘me.”  Frau Schmitt likes La Belle’s unofficial theme video song, but I wouldn’t say she’s enamored with it.   When I say ‘one’ of my favorite videos, I don’t want it to seem like I keep a list.  I don’t watch a lot of videos.  I don’t spend a lot of time on the internet.  Like most people who live in New Orleans, I’ve got stuff to do, out and about in our neighborhood.  Spending time on the internet seems like a forlorn and lonely way to fritter away one’s time.  No offense.  Thanks for stopping by!  A good blog is hard to find.  When you’re thinking about Destination Known in New Orleans, there’s really only one boutique experience inn to consider.  I’m talking about La Belle Esplanade.

Do I have any other favorite videos that I like to revisit annually?  No.  But, here is a favorite video of mine that may or may not be of interest to you.  It’s a real New Orleans video, too, it turns out.  Groucho Marx was prescient.  You’ll meet a lot of tattooed ladies in New Orleans:

It’s just another day in New Orleans’ opera.

So, without further ado, let’s kickstart and restart La Belle Esplanade’s ongoing tradition of viewing Alex Gaudino’s “Destination Calabria” video.  Calabria is a province in Italy, the toe of the boot.  New Orleans reminds me a lot of Naples.

When I lived in Naples, Italy, for three years, people who lived in bella Napoli told me that Naples was just a taste of what was further south of the city.  I was reading a guidebook about Naples recently and it said on the first page that Italy gets more intense the further you go south down the peninsula.  Let me tell you, Louisiana gets more intense the further south you go.  New Orleans is a concentration of everything you think Louisiana is—and then some more.  And, then some more of that.  If you like Naples (Naples, Italy, NOT Naples, Florida) you’re gonna love New Orleans.   New Orleans is all about brass bands and getting tuckered out from dancing all day long.  It’s about other things, too…

For the life of me, I’ve never figured out why I find this video so compelling but it’s become a part of La Belle Esplanade’s tradition.  It has very little relation to New Orleans’ brass band traditions.  Or does it?  Come visit New Orleans to decide for yourself.  The longer you stay, the more you’ll realize what you don’t know about New Orleans.  New Orleans is a puzzle that won’t make sense until all the pieces fall in place for you.

Maybe I like this video because the ladies’ jackets are dyed Trip Advisor green.

New Orleans is like an onion.  Not that New Orleans will make you cry, unless you’re crying from happiness.  New Orleans is like an onion because it has so many layers.  New Orleans is a paradise of loving, destination known.

À votre santé, nos amis,

La Belle Esplanade
