What is New Orleans?

There are some cities that have names all their own, cities so well known that they don’t have to quantify or qualify where they are talking about like the difference between Camden, NSW, Australia, the London borough or Camden, Camden, Alabama, Camden, Arkansas, Camden, Illinois, Camden, Indiana, Camden, New Jersey, etc., etc. etc.  At last count, there are 17 Camdens in America.  There is a Camden in South Africa.  There is  only one New Orleans.  What is New Orleans?

You know some of these unique and instantly identifiable cities because they are the capital of whatever it is they specialize in: i.e.: Detroit is Motor City.  New Orleans is The City That Care Forgot.

You know others because their names are so improbable that no other place has the same name, or a name anything similar.  You don’t have to ask someone where Saskatoon is.  You know it’s in Saskatchewan.  There is only one New Orleans.  It’s nothing like the old Orléans.

You know others, still, because they are celebrated in story or in song.  When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, you know you’re in Napoli, where love is king, where boy meets girl, and here’s what they sing:

Boys meet girls in New Orleans, too.  The moon will hit your eye like a plate of jambalaya. C’est l’amour.  When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine, that’s New Orleans.

Let me pose some existential urban American geography questions.  If you are from America, this will be an easy exercise.  If you aren’t from America (and many of La Belle Esplanade’s guests aren’t from America) it becomes an even more essentially existential question.  There is no right or wrong answer.  Read one of the following questions, or read them all, and then close your eyes.  Let the associations burble up from your unconscious to your conscious mind.  Savor the answer in your imagination.  What is New Orleans?

New Orleans is a smile that won’t disappear.  If you don’t smile when you’re thinking about New Orleans, I feel sorry for you.  You must be dead from your heart up.  Even the corpses in their above-ground graves grin in New Orleans.  Everybody and every body is happy to be here.

In Italian, the say, “Vita bella.”  In French, the original language of New Orleans that still informs this remarkable city’s sensibilities, they say, “Vive la belle.”  Long live La Belle Esplanade.

You’ll discover a different side of New Orleans than what you expect from the guidebook tourist top-ten list you’ve been led to expect when you stay at La Belle Esplanade.  Ours is a hotel like no other.  We live on a beautiful street and good memories are made here— in a city like no other.  You can visit New Orleans, or you can live it like you mean it.

New Orleans’ second nature is Providence, and I’m not talking about Rhode Island.  What is New Orleans?  It’s first nature is happiness, happiness, happiness, joy, a smile that will last long after you’ve forgotten what you’re smiling about.  New Orleans will linger like a barnacle on an oyster shell on your spirit.  Don’t throw that shell away.  It holds a pearl.

Wednesday, October 4, 2017:  It was Tremé festival last weekend.  It’s going to be Gentilly Festival next weekend.  If neither of these neighborhood names mean anything to you now, they will after you visit.  New Orleans is a many-splendored city made up of many interlocking parts.  The culture here is deep and richly textured in ways unlike Miami, Boston, Pocatello, Milwaukee, Honolulu, or anywhere else on this marvelous globe.  New Orleans is a world of its own.  Come see for yourself.  We live in a wonderful world.
